Supporting Your Child

Purple book Enjoy reading with your child

It’s never too early to start sharing books with your child. Look in the Stories from the Web Bookshelf for ideas about books you can share with your children aged 0-7 years. You can search by theme, book title, author name, or just browse the whole bookshelf. Remember, books are to enjoy and often they help you deal with certain situations you and your child may experience e.g. new baby, starting school, going to the doctors.

Blue book Tips for sharing books with your child
starMake storytime a special time with your child. Books can be used throughout the day as part of games or to calm children at bedtime. Finding a few minutes throughout the day will help your child learn.
starPoint at the words as you read the story with your child. Use different voices for characters in the story and ask your child questions about the story and what might happen. This will keep their concentration and interest – young children will not usually sit for long periods of time so keep storytime short and be guided by your child.
starTalk about the pictures with your child as this will improve their vocabulary and observation skills
star Encourage your child to join in with lots of actions and sounds so they have fun whilst learning.
star Give your child the opportunity to hold the book and explore it themselves. They will soon want to tell you the story in their own words by looking and pointing at the pictures.
star Children often want you to read the same book as they like to anticipate when the exciting parts are coming. This familiarity and repetition helps them learn.
starRemember, reading should be fun! Share lots of books with your child – get a Library Card for them as soon as you can!
