Here are Dreadlockalien's top poetry writing tips:

1) Where to get ideas
2) Techniques to write a good poem
3) Deciding on style, length and layout
4) What to do when you get stuck
5) Other helpful tips

1) Where do you get the ideas for your poetry?

Ideas now appear from commissions with people asking me to write about certain things however ideas spring from anywhere, the key is to capture and preserve them until you can afford to pay more attention to them.

2) What are the techniques used to write a good poem?

Research the topic and collect associated words. These will shape the poem's content, the key to a good poem is how you bring those words to life.

3) How do you decide on the style, length and layout?

The topic, the flavour and the slant on what you are trying to say or convey will shape
the poem’s direction. Tone, pause, pace, and timing are all additional ingredients for creating a tasty piece of writing.

4) What do you do when you get stuck with part of a poem?

If you get stuck, reverse and try a three point turn, phone a friend, or get a taxi. Just
leave the brain power on stand by until the poem calls you again. I have about 200 partly written or nearly finished poems. So far only 32 have made it from the page to the stage.

5) Other helpful tips?

Enjoy your poetry, see it as a long journey with some good stopping points. Not every poem is a winner but are all part of the foundations of your craft. Be proud of your good pieces, own them and walk within them with expression. Keep it live and lyrical. Recording onto a mobile phone, mp3, audio, video, ee oh, from idea to page, pen or keyboard to stage then your poem will start to engage.
