Frequently Asked Questions

When and how did Stories from the Web start?
Stories from the Web started as a research project in 1997. The 11-14 area was launched in September 2002 and the 0-7 area was launched November 2005. We wanted to promote books and to encourage young people to write stories and because it is on a website we decided to call it 'Stories from the Web'.

How do you log in or become a member?
You need to live in a subscribing area in the UK to be a member of Stories from the Web and get a username and password. Look here to see if libraries in your area subscribe to Stories from the Web. If your library isn't listed why not tell them about Stories from the Web. They can contact us to find out more. However, you can still visit Stories from the Web, read the stories and poems and send in your creative writing for display in the gallery.

How long does it take for my work to appear in the gallery?
We are in the office Monday to Friday and display work as soon as we can. We hope you enjoy seeing your work displayed in the gallery.

Can you give me some advice on getting published?
The best thing to do is to look at Publisher websites as they will provide you with information on how to submit work to them. You will find that most Publishers will only accept writing that has been sent to them through an agent. To find out more information on how to do this, it is worth looking at the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook which you should be able to find in your local Library. Good luck, and remember most Authors gets lots of rejection letters before they get published!

When is the next competition?
We have regular competitions every three or four months. Keep checking back to see what’s new!

Why are certain areas and competitions only open to members?
The Stories from the Web team are developing the site for use by young people in member areas. This reflects the way we work in partnership with authorities around the UK. To check if you can become a member see 'How do you log in or become a member?' above.
