Young Readers Birmingham THE MOTION:
Children's books should have a
recommended age range on the cover.

Should young people decide for themselves when they’re the right age to read a book or do teachers, parents and publishers know better?

John Dolan OBE

John Dolan O.B.E.

As Head of Marketing for Children's Books at Oxford University Press, Anna gets involved in working with editorial, design, and sales colleagues on books from the moment a manuscript is bought from the author and their agent; through how the cover should look to appeal to the right audience; and how OUP are going to make sure people know about the book.
It's a complex and exciting process. Anna has worked with children's books before - as a Children's Librarian for Bucks Library Service - and she loves
being part of other people's enjoyment of reading.

Until April last year, John worked for the government on long-term plans for public libraries developing ideas around reading, learning, and information services for health, and lifelong learning. A big focus of his work was children and young people and library services. Before that John was Head of Birmingham Libraries and also worked closely with Early Years education and Family Learning, the Youth Service and Adult Education. John lives in Birmingham and now works as a consultant. He was honoured with an OBE for his work on libraries and information provision. Recent reads include Barack Obama’s Dreams from my father, Liver by Will Self and a re-read of Treasure Island.
