Being Heard graphic
You have rights and the right to have your say!

Just because you are a kid doesn't mean that you don't have opinions and thoughts about things right?

Right!

So get out there and make a positive contribution to your world by standing up for what you believe in and getting together with other people to make the world a better place.

What can you do?

Find out if your school has a School Council which is an elected group of pupils who work together to improve things for the other children. They speak to Teachers, School Govenors and Managers to suggest changes and improvements to the school. They also work to help stop bullying in schools.

Get involved with a campaign for your favourite good cause or charity. You could join with other people to raise money for the cause, or write to MP's to try and get them to support your cause, you might even get involved in a sponsored event or go on a protest march.

Your Human Rights

Are you being bullied, or is someone being unkind to you? Nobody has the right to bully you or to do anything to your body that you don't want them too. You have a right to tell someone about it and get help. And there are lots of adults out there who believe in your rights and want to help.

So tell someone - stand up for your rights!

Speak to your favorite teacher, or the school nurse, or another adult that you like and trust. If you can't do that you can ring childline (it is free!) and they have a great website with lots of help and advice and forums to share your problems on.

What does it mean?

Elected

If someone is elected to do something, it means that other people have voted for them. Voting is when a group of people make a decision. Each person in the group gives their opinion and then all the opinions are added up to find out which is the most popular. Most people agree that this is a good way to choose our leaders.

To elect means "to choose or make a decision."
